How to Be Confident During a Beauty Pageant Interview?

Make the best impression during your pageant interview that will show the real you, make you memorable, and win you that title!

Prepare for your interview by giving yourself the time to make yourself knowledgeable about

  • Your opinion on your own beliefs, your platform, current events, and what is important in the world around you.
  • Educate yourself on general knowledge subjects often forgotten such as- titleholders, organizations, people, ideals, and events that are important to the pageant system you are competing in as well as government officials and lawmakers pertinent to your community, state, and country.
  • Fill out your platform and interview application with great conversation starter topics and facts about you. The more you include, the more the judges will want to get to know you and choose you as the winner!
Above all, plan to go into your interview to be honest, be yourself, and with the notion that "People may not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

Easy does it. Remind yourself that this interview, while important, it not a life or death situation. Many times a girl who is usually very at ease and extremely personable allows nerves to get the best of her and take over the interview. To achieve the most relaxed, focused mindset, allow yourself 10-15 minutes before you enter the interview room to mentally prepare. Take this time to slow your thoughts and quiet your mind. Allow yourself to breathe slowly and collect yourself. Remind yourself that you are in control of whatever is about to happen during your interview and although you may not have all the answers, you are going to relax and do the best you can.

Upon entering the judging room, smile and make eye contact with every judge. You want them to remember you and ultimately, the impression you are about to make.

Answer questions honestly, concisely, and to the best of your ability. For example, should a judge ask you: "What have you done to advocate your platform 'Save the Green Turtles' to your community?" Don't say "I did a lot of things to raise money and let people know it is a problem and stuff." Say: "I was so excited to have raised $400 dollars to the Green Turtles Foundation by holding a car wash in my hometown and spoke at our high school's biology club meeting about preserving the turtles' depleting habitat. I hope that holding the title Miss So and So will help raise more awareness about this pressing issue to our local lawmakers."
An answer like the one above tells judges more than what you've done to save the green turtles. It tells them that you have a specific plan in mind for your platform and your future as Miss So and So and that you are prepared to take on the title and the challenges that go with it!

Never lie. If you don't know the answer to something, that is not a crime! Don't try to hide it. Instead, say something like: "I would love to form an opinion on that issue if I were more knowledgeable on the facts. I honestly don't have an answer for you."
Try to keep up on issues that are truly relevant and decide how you feel about them so you have an idea of how to answer opinion questions. If you are clueless about something that is affecting everyone around you and have no answer, it will seem like you do not care about what is going on around you. However, if you do get a question that is totally out of left field, remember that you can't know everything, and know that other judges may agree that it was an unfair question.

Take "vanilla" questions, i.e. "What's your favorite color?" and other not so intriguing questions and turn them toward a topic that you are knowledgeable about, your platform! For example, you could say, "My favorite color is green because it reminds me of the gorgeous world around us and how important it is to take care of it for future generations and animals, such as the Green Turtle...etc. etc.

Try to let the real you shine. Act like you are talking with your best friend's parents. You want to act mature, responsible and be a good influence, but still be yourself. Laugh, smile and even joke a little.

If you prompted to give a closing statement, take advantage of it! Have in mind a short (three sentence maximum) statement that summarizes your goal of being Miss So and So and why you should be chosen. Something like "It was wonderful getting to speak with you more- thank you for your kind attention. Being Miss So and So is an honor that I aspire to. If chosen, I plan to make the most of every moment and use it for a greater good. Please choose me as your Miss So and So and make my dream come true. Thank you." Take that moment to find a genuine "you" statement and let it be the

Classy is key. Aim for an un-fussy, elegant, and appropriate appearance that says "This is the best version of me and I own it."

Remember that you are not only showcasing how knowledgeable, personable, and genuine you are, you also must give a visual representation of yourself that show you take care of yourself and stand out of a crowd. Wear something that is comfortable, flattering, and memorable. Feature a great accessory- a brooch, pin, belt, or fantastic unique something that is really "you." If your platform is Breast Cancer Awareness, you BETTER be wearing a pink ribbon pin!

You may want to practice your interview by holding a mock interview well beforehand and videotaping it. Ask people who maybe you may not know very well or a mentor to be the judges and create the feel of "meeting you for the first time" rather than friends or family you know well. This will get the jitters out and give you a real taste of the experience. Later, watch the tape. It's feedback comes from watching yourself. Notice any nervous habits of yours or faces that you make that you are unaware of that might be affecting your interview. Use this information not to belittle yourself, but to acknowledge your little quirks, and find a resolution. If your hands shake, clasp them gently behind your back. If you stumble on words or start mumbling, remember to take deep breaths and think before you speak.
